Continuous Professional Development (CPD) training courses are considered vital to help the global healthcare workforce maintain and develop their skills. However, we don’t always know the impacts on actual practice, or understand what barriers and facilitators there may be for healthcare staff in putting ideas from training into action. During the talk, Nim and Eleanor will share work to use theories and approaches from behavioural science to explore the impact and implementation of obstetric anaesthesia training in Tanzania, Nepal and Bangladesh. This included supporting in-country anaesthetist Fellows to carry out theory-based qualitative interviews with 78 healthcare workers who had attended a global health CPD training course, SAFE Obstetrics, and developing feasible ways of observing practice behaviours. They will share the co-development approaches used, the evaluation findings and our reflections on applying behavioural science methods and tools in global health settings.
