Bristol Hub for Gambling Harms: First International Interdisciplinary Colloquium: Building capacity in gambling harms research

Established in July 2022, funded by a grant awarded by GambleAware, the Bristol Hub for Gambling Harms Research is an independent hub created to build capacity in cutting-edge gambling harms research.

This one-day conference will showcase gambling harms research; feature keynotes from government, lived experience and research experts from around the world; invite all participants to discuss ways of tackling gambling harms across disciplinary, practice and international boundaries; and enable rich networking.  It is an in-person event but will also be livestreamed.

We will be inviting all those with an interest in gambling harms research: researchers from all disciplines, all methodologies and from all career stages; those with lived experience of gambling harms; regulators; treatment providers; and gambling harms charities.

The theme is “Building capacity in gambling harms research”, with keynotes and panel sessions reflecting the four Research Challenges of the Hub:

  • Perceptions, Motivations, Decisions. What initiates harmful gambling?
  • Narratives, Practice, Representation.  What is the everyday practice and portrayal of gambling in social groups?
  • Experience, Risk, Harm. What social and spatial inequalities exacerbate gambling harms?
  • Innovation, Transition, Change. What socio-technical innovations can help combat gambling harms?

Abstract submission:

  • A poster session will be an integral part of the Colloquium and an opportunity for attendees to present and discuss their work with other delegates through informal networking.
  • Up to 40 posters will be selected (10 posters per challenge) and displayed on posterboards (2m x 1m) for viewing and discussion during breaks and lunch sessions.
