Visual perception and animal camouflage

A workshop in Ecology and Behaviour hosted by the School of Biological Sciences

'The incredible diversity of animal colouration that we see in nature is not only explained by the visual sensitivity of viewers, but also by the perceptive processes occurring in animal brains. In this talk, I will discuss whether animals can use their body colouration to reduce or remove 3D shape cues. I also explore the intriguing suggestion that these same cues might be exploited to produce the (false) illusion of shape. I also consider whether recent developments in computer vision science can provide insights into the potential shape illusions generated by animal patterning.
