Science animation workshop

This workshop is kindly funded by the University of Bristol Doctoral College PGR Development Fund and is available only to University of Bristol Postgraduate Research students (PGRs).

The use of science animation is increasing for communicating to both scientific and public audiences. Come and learn the basics of science animation with Catherine Bone (Medical Art, and tutor at the Medical Artists' Education Trust).

During the workshop, we will cover some background and the process of planning an animation and have a go at animating some simple objects on Blender. The practical part will consist of:

  1. Animating proteins and macromolecules: import proteins from the Protein Data Bank and animate them in a lipid membrane
  2. Animating particles: animate red blood cells through a vessel
  3. Animating organs: animate some lungs to simulate breathing
  4. Animating instruments and machinery: we will finish off with a conceptual animation which combines the techniques learnt in the first 3 sections. Here we will animate the machinery and some cells as they undergo gene therapy!

Please bring your own laptop and ideally a three-button mouse. We will be using the software Blender and it is recommended to install this ahead of the workshop in case there are any problems. No prior knowledge of science animation is needed.
