A Snapshot seminar hosted by the School of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience.
Abstract: The International Brain Laboratory (IBL) is a virtual laboratory bringing together experimental and theoretical neuroscientists from 22 research groups across 5 countries to understand brain-wide circuits for complex behavior. IBL's researchers are dedicated to standardizing mouse decision-making behavior, coordinating measurements of neural activity across the brain, and using theoretical approaches to formalize the neural computations that support decision-making. In contrast to traditional neuroscientific practice, in which individual laboratories each probe different behaviors and record from a few select brain areas, IBL aims to deliver a standardized, high-density approach to behavioral and neural assays. So far, protocols, code and data have been published on behavior and neural recordings, with some surprising findings on reproducibility. These experiments highlight some surprising findings on reproducibility in systems neuroscience, and offer a set of open, standardized resources for the field to use Moreover, IBL is committed openness and collective/democratic governance. Here, I will highlight lessons learned during IBL’s first years, ranging from developing strategies for successful communications and shared decision-making, to nurturing development of early-career researchers.
