Mental rotation is the ability that humans have to rotate mental representations of two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects, and which allow them to recognise objects in unusual poses. Deep networks lack such ability, and as a consequence are less robust than the human visual system. In this talk I will discuss our ongoing work to understand how the human brain performs mental rotation, and how to implement a similar process in deep learning.
