Professor Emma Hornby wrote the prize-winning article together with Professor Eduardo Carrero Santamaría (Autonomous University of Barcelona; Leverhulme Visiting Professor at Bristol 2021-23) and Professor Rebecca Maloy (University of Notre Dame; Emma's long-term academic collaborator).

This article analyzes the liturgy of Carnes Tollendas Sunday from the Old Hispanic rite (six weeks before Easter), as reflected in the eighth-century Verona Orational, reconstructing it through the lens of topography in Visigothic Tarragona. According to the prize committee, this article is original and erudite but also creative, perfectly integrating liturgical, urban, and architectural history, in an exemplary interdisciplinary article.
