Curriculum actions

How we are training the next generation of sustainable medics.

Sustainability in the curriculum

Bristol Medical School offers specific Green Student Choice Projects throughout Years 1–3, providing students with the opportunity to explore sustainability in healthcare. These projects allow students to engage in research and practical initiatives focused on environmental responsibility within medical practice, from Culinary Medicine to a Practical Introduction to Wilderness Medicine.

A series of lectures on Planetary Physiology and Pathology are part of the curriculum, exploring the critical intersections between environmental change and human health.

Planetary Health Report Card (PHRC)

Annually, the Medical School engages in the Planetary Health Report Card (PHRC) initiative, facilitating student assessment of sustainability efforts and global health impacts. This collaborative endeavor enables medical schools globally to exchange ideas, fostering continual improvement in sustainable medical education.

On Earth Day 2025, the PHRC for 139 medical schools across the globe was published and Bristol Medical School scored not only 2nd in the UK but 2nd in the world. Read our full PHRC report. Find out more in our Sustainability blog.
