We are delighted to welcome you to the School of Mathematics.

You will find below information on all of the School specific activities taking place throughout welcome week and beyond. From course induction, building tours (please note that all tours on each date will follow the same route), and a range of social events. We hope that you will be able to join us!

School welcome week timetable

Join us 9th-13th September for our School welcome activities. 

Tuesday 10th September

Welcome to the Fry Building - Brunch and Building Tours, 9am - 11.30am (Fry Building main entrance)

Join us for a free brunch and get to meet fellow students on your course.


Feel free to join us at one of our timeslots between 9:00am-10:15am or 10:15am-11:30am. Please ensure that you register here to confirm your attendance at the brunch. 

Tours of the building will also be taking place during this time.


Personal tutor meetings 9:00am - 11:30am

Knot Theory Macramé: Give it a Go!

Join Matrix for a group craft session! Meet your peers and our social secretaries in the first event of this year and have some fun while you do it! We will provide instructions and demonstrations on how to make some designs during the session. Cord and Dowel will be provided. This is an alcohol-free social. Matrix (Maths) - Oliver Johnson: Pandemic War Stories, 24th October 2024, 6.30 - 7.30pm 

Join Matrix for their first talk of the year!

We will hear of the challenges of publishing a book on mathematics for a general audience and learn how maths made sense of the COVID-19 pandemic from Professor Oliver Johnson.

He is Professor of Information Theory and Head of the School of Mathematics at the University of Bristol, and author of Numbercrunch.

This is an alcohol-free event.
