Media appearances for two School academics

4 July 2025

Dr Henna Koivusalo and Professor Oliver Johnson both make recent media appearances.

Dr Henna Koivusalo was interviewed for the newspaper Aamuposti in her home country of Finland. She spoke about her career as a mathematician, that has led to her living abroad for the past 12 years, and her motivation for studying mathematics in the first place. They quote her as saying:

"Even though all of mathematics is logical — every statement is either true or false — it also allows for a world of creative thinking and challenges our imagination. [--] The field of mathematics is broad enough to allow for many different kinds of thinkers."

"It is often thought that studying mathematics only leads to a career in research or teaching, but this is not the case. Many industry careers also open up with a maths degree — after all, mathematical logical thinking is the basis for solving any problem."

Professor Oliver Johnson's recent personal blogpost on the accuracy of the new Adam Curtis series https://bristoliver.substack.com/p/shifty-stuff was discussed on the BBC Radio 4 Programme More or Less. In particular, Professor Johnson's claims were analysed by election analyst Sir John Curtice (the clip is 13'59" into the episode on the BBC Sounds website.
