Stories about Hollywood's Hippest mathematics. A celebration of Women and Girls in STEM

12 February 2025, 4.00 PM - 12 February 2025, 5.00 PM

G.10, School of Mathematics, Fry Building, BS8 1UG

To celebrate Women and Girls in STEM day, the School of Mathematics is showcasing some of our leading and emerging talent in this space to increase the visibility of female contributions to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, but also to inspire women, girls, and underrepresented genders to study these exciting subjects. Our celebration will start with a talk by Professor Nina Snaith: Stories about Hollywood's Hippest mathematics: random matrices and primes. Nina will tell us how her work has inspired Hollywood and we will follow this on with a panel discussion by female academics, who will share some of the interesting work that they have done and how this has made a difference.

Panelists:
Nina Snaith (Mathematical Physics)
Rachel Bennett (Mathematical Biology)
Laura Monk (Pure Mathematics)
Asma Hassannezhad (Analysis)

This event is open to the public and we particularly encourage families who would like to learn more about the work that mathematicians do, as well as young people who are tying to decide what they would like to do after they complete their GCSE study. These activities will be followed by a free pizza reception (5-5:45pm), where you will have a chance to chat with the speaker and the panel members.

This is a hybrid event. Book via ticket tailor now!
