Biography

Signe Kastberg is a mathematics teacher educator at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, USA where she is a full professor (2017- present) and is the Mary Endres Endowed Chair of Elementary Education (2022 – present). At Purdue University she teaches courses in mathematics education at the graduate and undergraduate levels.  In addition, she supervises graduate students in mathematics education and serves as a faculty mentor. Her interest is in mathematics teacher educator knowledge and development with a focus on instructional activity design and practices. She has published research reports in several high-ranking journals such as Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education; Journal of Mathematical Behavior; and For Learning of Mathematics. In addition, she has contributed chapters to The International Handbook of Mathematics Teacher Education; Designing, Conducting, and Publishing Quality Research in Mathematics Education; and Interdisciplinarity and Mathematics Education. Kastberg is an internationally respected scholar as evidenced by her selection as topic study group leader for the International Congress of Mathematics Education (ICME) to be held in Sydney Australia in 2024. Her expertise in mathematics teacher educator practices and pedagogy has been recognized in the United States as illustrated by her selection for Excellence in Teaching in Mathematics Teacher Education Award by the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators in 2018. This award recognizes a mathematics teacher educator for her unique contribution in teaching that has made a “significant contribution to the pedagogy of mathematics teacher education” (https://amte.net/about/awards).  

Research Summary

Dr. Kastberg will work with Dr. Helliwell on their research collaboration focused on how mathematics teacher educators design and implement instructional activities and practices. Kastberg and Helliwell will build from their joint leadership of a topic study group focused on “Knowledge and practice of mathematics teacher educators” at the 15th International Congress of Mathematics Education (ICME-15), in Sydney in July 2024. 

Dr. Kastberg will present lectures for a variety of audiences during her visit including: 

Intimate Scholarship: Being, Knowing, and Ethics 

Open seminar (Bristol Conversations in Education) 

This talk will focus on methods and representations of becoming and learning from teaching using intimate scholarship drawing from a study of teacher educator certainty in professional change conducted with Dr. Helliwell of University of Bristol. This evidence will support a claim that practitioners who use intimate scholarship view knowing as dynamic and situated and choose to represent knowing through self-exploration. 

Exploring and Defining Relational Practice 

School of Education (Research Centre for Teaching, Learning and Curriculum (TLC)) 

Relationships have been identified as foundational in professional education, yet what is meant by relationship is often left to the practitioner to imagine and define. Definitions for relational teacher education and characteristics of this construct will be illustrated using examples from Dr. Kastberg’s practice and research. Relational teacher education is presented as lens for teacher educators seeking to improve practice. 

Navigating the Self and Engaging with Others in Constructing Visions of Quality in Mathematics Education Research 

Graduate Students and Mathematics Education Research Network (MERN) 

Producing quality mathematics education research involves two factors often left unexamined: navigating the self and engaging with others. In this talk Dr. Kastberg will share examples of managing evolving perspectives of self in the context of the quest for knowledge.
