Philosophy of Science Seminar: 'The Metaphysical Implications of an Ontology of Information'

26 March 2025, 4.00 PM - 26 March 2025, 5.30 PM

Bristol Benjamin Meaker Distinguished Visiting Professor Dean Rickles, University of Sydney, Australia

G.2, Department of Philosophy, Cotham House

This lecture will focus primarily on digital physics and the limits of knowledge. In particular, a recent approach by Stephen Wolfram will be discussed, in which the problem of including the modeller provides a strong basis for a denial of the possibility of theories of everything that amount to theories of totality.

Professor Dean Rickles is a Professor of History and Philosophy of Modern Physics at the University of Sydney, where he also serves as a Co-Director of the university’s interdisciplinary Centre of Time. He is visiting Bristol as a Benjamin Meaker Distinguished Visiting Professor and collaborating with Dr Karim Thebault in the Department of Philosophy on the project Philosophy of Digital Physics.
