TLC/MERN seminar by Dr Sean Chorney: 'Indigenizing the curriculum: Exploring some of the challenges for Canadian teachers'

Dr Sean Chorney is a Bristol Next Generation Visiting Researcher. He is visiting from Simon Fraser University, Canada, and working with Dr Tracy Helliwell on the project Mathematics Teacher Educators distributed expertise: Transition from secondary school mathematics teaching to preservice teacher education.

Asking non-Indigenous mathematics teachers to include Indigenous perspectives into their teaching can be challenging, yet this is exactly what is happening in Canada. For example, there is a specific call in the British Columbia curriculum to “Incorporate First Peoples worldviews and perspectives to make connections to mathematical concepts”. In this working session, Sean will share some of the mathematical activities that he has developed, and gathered from others, that attempt to align with Indigenous perspectives.
