Online Lecture 'Dimensions of Digitalization and Social Change'

31 October 2023, 2.00 PM - 31 October 2023, 3.30 PM

Bristol Benjamin Meaker Distinguished Visiting Professor Theodore R. Schatzki, University of Kentucky, USA

Online

‌This talk will explore several dimensions of digitally-induced social change. It begins by outlining a “theory of social form.” According to this theory, social phenomena exhibit four key dimensions of variation: composition, interactions/associations, space and time, and culture. Social changes are composed of transformations in these four dimensions. Drawing on theories of practices, the talk continues by exploring sociodigital changes in the first three of these dimensions. Such changes are the organizing themes of the author’s Leverhulme Visiting Professor project, which will be carried out at the ESRC Centre for Sociodigital Futures in the first half of 2025. Practicalities of that project will also be discussed.

All staff and students at the University of Bristol with an interest in this area are warmly invited. The venue at the Centre for Sociodigital Futures has limited capacity so this lecture is also being broadcast online.
