Progress in Motion: Advancements in avian Immunology and Poultry Vaccine Development

Hosted by Bristol Veterinary School

The Talk will cover: A comprehensive overview of ongoing research activities, the seminar will be segmented into four distinct sections, which include:

  • Understanding Immune Evasion in Chickens: Exploring pathogens' tactics in evading immune control by activating COX2/PGE2/ITGB8 pathway and modulating immune responses in chickens.
  • Innovative Marek's Disease Vaccine Platform: Pioneering a novel technique for developing cell-free Marek's disease vaccines, revolutionizing prevention strategies.
  • Unravelling Chicken NKT Cells: Investigating and characterizing chicken NKT cells and their ligands, dissecting their role in Marek's disease pathogenesis, providing valuable insights into disease mechanisms.
  • Harnessing Innate Immunity in Chickens: Exploring activation of innate immune cells as an alternative approach to combat bacterial infections in chickens, offering new avenues for infection control.

About Shahriar: After completing his undergraduate studies in Veterinary Medicine, Shahriar Behboudi was trained as an immunologist in Uppsala, Sweden. As a postdoctoral fellow at University of Oxford, he was involved in assessing the efficacy and immunogenicity of novel malaria and TB vaccines.  Later, Shahriar set up an independent research group with the aim to develop T cell-based immunotherapy for treatments of solid tumours.  In 2013, Shahriar took up the position of group leader at the Pirbright Institute and Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Immunology, University of Surrey. Shahriar joined Bristol Veterinary School in September 2023 as professor in Correlates of Protection. Shahriar’s research focuses on exploring host-pathogen interaction, immune evasion and vaccine development.
