Destruction of Memory screened in Somalia

4 December 2018

IAS- and WUN-supported documentary The Destruction of Memory continues to travel the globe

Filmmaker Tim Slade's documentary, The Destruction of Memory, was shown by the Redsea Cultural Foundation in Hargeysa, Somaliland, at the end of September. Based on the book of the same name by Robert BevanThe Destruction of Memory looks not just at the ongoing actions of Daesh (ISIS) and at other contemporary situations, but reveals the decisions of the past that allowed the issue of cultural destruction to remain hidden in the shadows for so many years. Interviewees include the Director-General of UNESCO, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, as well as diverse and distinguished international experts, whose voices combine to address this urgent issue.

Ann Singleton (Policy Studies) and IAS-WUN Manager Susan Jim met Tim in May 2017 at the WUN AGM in Amherst and decided to bring the film (and Tim) to Bristol. The Institute for Advanced Studies hosted two well-attended screenings and discussions of the documentary in April 2018, as part of the Bristol Festival of Ideas and in conjunction with Building Global Partnerships for Global Challenges symposium, and is delighted that this important work continues to be shown around the world.
