Teaching and technology innovation

The rapid emergence of generative AI into the public consciousness has fundamentally reshaped higher education and has, arguably, caught such institutes by surprise (1). As a growing number of students enter university with experience using AI tools, there has been a reported deficit in the instruction given to students and staff on these tools as well as their acceptable use as they pertain to education. For example, a recent UK survey reported 88% of students use generative AI tools such as ChatGPT to support their learning however, only 36% report having received training in AI skills from their institution. (2)

Aside from the way students use these general tools, there is an emerging interest in AI to support teaching such as in the provision of feedback and in providing support to students (3), as well as AI Agents used to create bespoke teaching activities.

In the Teaching and Technology Innovation Group, we focus on best practice when incorporating AI to support education. We consider specific use cases in teaching and learning support, as well as how best to promote AI literacy including its ethical implications.
