Inclusivity, wellbeing and decolonisation

Inclusivity, Wellbeing and Decolonisation are all increasingly important endeavours in universities around the globe. At University of Bristol there are many successful examples of great work in this space, and this best practice needs to be shred. The Inclusivity, Wellbeing and Decolonisation Special Interest Group (SIG) brings together staff committed to creating a more equitable, supportive, and critically reflective academic environment. The group provides a collaborative space to share practice, develop initiatives, and influence policy relating to inclusion, mental health, and decolonial approaches in teaching and research.

Grounded in the principles of respect, representation, and belonging, the SIG aims to challenge systemic barriers, amplify diverse voices, and embed wellbeing across all aspects of university life. Through workshops, research collaborations, and community engagement, our members will work collectively to promote cultural awareness, inclusive pedagogy, and ethical scholarship.

By fostering dialogue and innovation, the Inclusivity, Wellbeing and Decolonisation SIG contributes to the faculty’s broader vision of ensuring that all members of its community can thrive, feel valued, and actively shape a more just and inclusive academic future.

Current work

As a recently formed group of individuals across multiple school, we are commencing by sharing our own experiences and work in this area. There is a range of excellent work already taking place across the faculty and we will document this, identifying excellent case studies, with potential for cross-school sharing and also gaps and hence future training requirements. Based on our findings we will then plan workshops and/or training sessions for faculty staff and will conduct a small research project to measure the impact of our efforts.
