Rosemary Fowler
Doctor of Science

Rosemary Fowler is a retired physicist. She discovered the kaon particle during her PhD under Cecil Powell at the University of Bristol in 1948 which contributed to Cecil Powell’s Nobel Prize for Physics in 1950.
Rosemary left the University without completing her PhD, which she later described as a pragmatic choice for her three young children and in a time of food rationing. Rosemary’s discovery of particles and contribution to our understanding of fundamental interactions in physics has often been attributed to Powell and her husband Peter Fowler, and this honorary degree acknowledges the vital role she has played in science. In 2004, Rosemary donated to the Royal Astronomical Society to set up the annual Fowler Award for Early Achievement in Astronomy.
