Terms and Conditions
For details of our short course terms and conditions, including refund and exchange policy, please see the information below. If you have any further queries please contact us on english-lifelong@bristol.ac.uk.
Refund and Exchange Policy
Refunds
- Refunds for our short courses are only to be given in exceptional circumstances and no less than one month before the course is due to start.
- Refunds for a course already started cannot be accepted.
- If a student is unable to attend a course before it has begun and there is a waiting list, refunds can be granted should their place be successfully transferred to a person on the waiting list.
- Refunds will only be processed once receipt of the waiting list student’s fee has been confirmed and can take up to three weeks.
- If a course is cancelled or withdrawn by the University, course fees will be refunded, normally in full, within three weeks.
Exchanges/transfers
- If a student is unable to take up their place on a booked short course, this place can be transferred to another named individual, with the exception of programmes that are subject to an application process.
- Students are permitted to switch to an alternative short course provided the request is sent no less than one month before the course is due to start. Requests sent after this time will be subject to the exchange policy set out below.
- If a student wishes to withdraw from a course once it has begun and wishes to defer their place onto a different course, they may only request to do so within a week of joining the initially chosen course. Students are only guaranteed a place on the different course if it does not sell out. A guarantee of deferred places can only be confirmed one week before that course is due to start. In this instance, if a student is successful in transferring onto a course which has lower fees, no refund will be payable.
- In the case that a student is successful in transferring onto a course which has higher fees, the student must top-up their fee to the amount of the higher fee prior to joining.
- Students on courses subject to an application process must re-apply should they wish to transfer their place to a different course subject to an application process.
- Students on short courses subject to an application process wishing to defer their place to a different academic year must re-apply for their place.
- We reserve the right to refuse entry onto a course at any time in alignment with the University's policies. Details of which are available here www.bristol.ac.uk/secretary/legal/.
- Short Course fees are updated at the beginning of each academic year.
- Students on our short courses (with the exception of pathway courses) are not provided with a UCard or access to the library or study facilities.
- With the exception of pathway courses, we are not able to provide accreditation or certification for our Humanities short courses.
- Letters of attendance can be sent on request.
- It is your responsibility to make sure you have the relevant information to enable you to attend the course. Any course queries should be directed to english-lifelong@bristol.ac.uk.
- Course attendance is monitored; however, it is at an individual’s discretion how many or how few sessions they choose to attend.
- We are unable to offer places to other students if a student has paid and chooses not to attend once the course has started, unless in exceptional circumstances.
- When attending an online course, it is your responsibility to ensure you have adequate internet access before the start of a course. Refunds will not be given for technical failure of your home computer or your internet access.
Waiting lists are used to indicate your interest in a course but it does not guarantee you a place and you are not obligated to enrol. People on waiting lists will be informed via email if an enrolled student cancels and a place becomes available. If you do not respond or book in the allocated time stated in our email, we will move to the next person on the waiting list.
- If you wish to be informed about upcoming courses, please contact english-lifelong@bristol.ac.uk to be added to our mailing list, or register your interest by filling out this form. Please note you only need to register your interest in our courses once. If you register your interest on more than one occasion you will receive duplicate emails.
- We operate a strict first-come-first-served booking policy for our short courses. Adding your details to our mailing list does not guarantee you a place on any of our courses.
- Course fees are based on reaching a minimum class number. We may need to cancel or postpone a course or workshop if we do not recruit this minimum number. We will offer you a full refund or, where possible, offer you to transfer to another course or workshop if we cancel a course. We will aim to contact you via email at least one week before the start date to let you know if your course is cancelled.
- We reserve the right to postpone a course if it does not reach the minimum capacity.
- Should a short course clash with University of Bristol staff industrial action, we will endeavour to rearrange course dates. If this is not possible, it may be necessary to cancel individual sessions or the entire course. In such situations, students are eligible to apply for a pro-rata refund for cancelled sessions on a case-by-case basis. Any refunds will be granted at the discretion of the Director of Part-Time Programmes.
- In the event of tutor illness, sessions will be cancelled, and all efforts will be made to inform students in advance. Sessions may be rearranged at the discretion of the Short Course Tutor and Director of Part-Time Programmes.
- Course tutors can be changed at any time before or after bookings have been made.
- Course dates and times can be changed at any time before or after bookings have been made.
- In the case of changes to the course dates, times or tutors, students will be eligible for a full refund if they can no longer attend a course due to changes made by the University.
Please also note that our Pathway courses are open by application only and are subject to a different set of payment terms and conditions. A copy of these terms and conditions will be sent to the student on acceptance of a place on the relevant course.
