Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT)
"Christchurch bakery students are following a new recipe for success – mix it, bake it, then photograph it on your cellphone."
Bakery Centre leader Selena Chan said apprentices came from all over the South Island and lower North Island, so grading their work during on-the-job training was difficult.
"It's not viable for us to travel everywhere and assess in the workplace, so they gather the evidence and send it to us," she said.
Apprentices will also photograph their freshly baked loaves, cupcakes and cookies and store pictures in internet photo-sharing sites such as Flickr, all on their cellphones.Chan said the students would then build up an online portfolio that could be accessed by tutors for marking and sent by email to prospective employers.
