Adult Learners

Informal learning (not recreational as in games, recreation as in “fun” through choice)

Issues:

  • How is content defined?
  • Facilitating vs. teaching
  • How do you evaluate?
  • No set learning outcomes
  • Asking the right questions rather than give answers
  • Self-initiated interest
  • What motivates people to do self-initiated learning?
  • What stops people from this learning?
  • How do people choose what they want to learn?
  • Does mobile technology make learning easier?
  • Gateway provided?  Information overload?
  • Across disciplines
  • Not just a device - syncs with other ICT

Self-Initiated learning is:

  • Post 16 year olds / Self de-schooled
  • Non-vocational
  • At sites of interest

Research Questions:

  • What motivates people to do self-initiated learning?
  • What stops people from this learning?
  • How does mobile technology facilitate and change the self-initiated learning experience?
  • What are the attributes of the mobile learner?
