What do we know ?
- End points are knowledge, skills and shared understanding
- Not spontaneous
- Issues equity
- Need agreed protocols e.g. version control and shared terminology
- Documents/other files can be shared and worked on by a variety of people whose edits can be tracked
- Learners may not believe in collaboration
- Technology can shape/capture collaborative interaction
- Overly dependent? on a) technology b) others
- CSCL research shows discussion online is problematic
- Debating to find a common understanding (deliberative discourse) is really important
- Some evidence that collaboration leads to better understanding
- Process is as important as end-product and represents learning
What more do we need to know ?
- What are the barriers to collaborative learning for teachers and learners - power, control, attitudes
- In F2F, how do the ergonomics of a 1:1 device compare to a group of 2-3 sharing a PC
- In what ways can/should technology be used to manage collaborative interactions
- Clear models of good collaboration - task, context and outcomes
- What is the role/importance of mobility?
- What is the role of the handheld in all this?
