Collaborative Learning

What do we know ?

  • End points are knowledge,  skills and shared understanding
  • Not spontaneous
  • Issues equity
  • Need agreed protocols e.g. version control and shared terminology
  • Documents/other files can be shared and worked on by a variety of people whose edits can be tracked
  • Learners may not believe in collaboration
  • Technology can shape/capture collaborative interaction
  • Overly dependent? on a) technology b) others
  • CSCL research shows discussion online is problematic
  • Debating to find a common understanding (deliberative discourse) is really important
  • Some evidence that collaboration leads to better understanding
  • Process is as important as end-product and represents learning

What more do we need to know ?

  • What are the barriers to collaborative learning for teachers and learners - power, control, attitudes
  • In F2F, how do the ergonomics of a 1:1 device compare to a group of 2-3 sharing a PC
  • In what ways can/should technology be used to manage collaborative interactions
  • Clear models of good collaboration - task, context and outcomes
  • What is the role/importance of mobility?
  • What is the role of the handheld in all this?
