Course Objectives

  • Develop Competence in Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment Techniques
    • Perform scaling and root planing (SRP) effectively using both manual and ultrasonic instruments to treat periodontal disease in various stages.
    • Understand the rationale for minimally invasive non-surgical technique (MINST) and perform MINST with ultrasonics.
    • Demonstrate proper instrumentation techniques, including reaching difficult areas (e.g. furcations, deep pockets, root grooves).
  • Conduct Comprehensive Periodontal Assessments specifically to identify local anatomical features that may impact effective debridement
  • Demonstrate Proper Ergonomics and Instrument Handling
    • Use correct ergonomic positioning and instrument handling and sharpening to ensure practitioner comfort and reduce fatigue during periodontal procedures.
  • Ensure Safe and Effective Treatment Delivery
    • Adhere to professional standards, infection control protocols and safety guidelines to provide non-surgical periodontal therapy in a safe, effective and ethical manner.
  • Multi-disciplinary care for active periodontal therapy and supportive periodontal care
    • Demonstrate ability to compose treatment prescription for dental hygienists/therapists.
    • Formulate comprehensive treatment plans involving all members of dental team for management of periodontal patients.
