ESA Seminar with Dr Anna Fogtman
Earlier in the year, students welcomed Dr Anna Fogtman from the European Space Agency (ESA), who delivered a fascinating seminar titled Operational Radiation Protection for Spaceflight.
During the session, Anna explored the challenges of safeguarding astronauts from radiation exposure. She also highlighted pathways for early-career researchers interested in joining ESA, outlining opportunities for PhD graduates to engage with cutting-edge space science and engineering.
Reflecting on the session Anna shared: “I hope my lecture will shed light on the interdisciplinary nature of human spaceflight and inspire new talent to join the effort of protecting astronauts from the dangers of space radiation.”
CoSEM student Ragnar Birgisson added “The talk was a fascinating intersection of engineering and human biology. It really highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary work when tackling complex engineering challenges.”
The seminar concluded with an informal networking session that allowed students and staff to continue discussions, exchange ideas, and seek advice on careers in space research.
Jaguar Land Rover Seminar with Frederic Sicard and Dr Mayra Yadira Rivera Lopez
In October, we were pleased to welcome Frederic Sicard and Dr Mayra Yadira Rivera Lopez from Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), who presented their latest insights into composite engineering and automotive innovation. Their talk showcased real-world examples of how composite materials are being applied in the automotive industry. Frederic and Mayra explored how JLR’s innovative use of sustainable composite materials demonstrates their ability to support the UK’s transition toward net-zero product manufacturing.
Frederic commented “It is always inspiring to share industry insights and challenges with the students from the University of Bristol. They have this delightful habit to frame their questions in such a way that it brings a new spin to your own reflection. Brilliant experience as ever!”
CoSEM student Joe Rifai reflected “It has been our pleasure to host Frederic Sicard and Dr Mayra Yadira Rivera Lopez from Jaguar Land Rover. Their wealth of knowledge and contribution to composite engineering in the automotive sector has inspired several researchers. The industrial seminars are a valuable opportunity for our CDT colleagues to gain different insights from industry and develop research that is aligned with the industrial needs for advanced composites.”
Thank you to Dr Anna Fogtman, Frederic Sicard and Dr Mayra Yadira Rivera Lopez for taking the time to visit, share expertise, and offer valuable insights to CoSEM CDT students.
