Early diagnosis, blood testing, and NICE cancer guidelines for leukaemia
online
Hosted by the Somerset, Wiltshire, Avon and Gloucestershire (SWAG) Cancer Alliance and Leukaemia Care
SWAG Cancer Alliance and Leukaemia Care held an event in April 2022, primarily aimed at pharmacists. This was a basic introduction to leukaemia diagnosis, combined with a talk on interactions with leukaemia treatments.
Since then, Leukaemia Care has conducted research into the challenges involved with blood testing according to the NICE guidelines. This was followed by a roundtable discussion to determine key messages:
- Capacity issues may affect the undertaking of blood testing,
- Greater awareness required of NICE guidelines and actions for people with symptoms
- Do NICE guidelines symptoms match patient experience?
This work has underpinned this early diagnosis event’s focus to provide a broader blood testing educational session for all those interested in earlier diagnosis and raising awareness for our patients.
