Aims: While significant advances in cancer biology have been made from research on individual and collective properties of cancer cells, studying tumours within a multiorgan setting is essential to identify tumour intrinsic and systemic principles involved in cancer initiation, progression and spread. The use of in vivo model organisms combined with genetic, metabolic, physiology, immune and behavioural studies is necessary to recapitulate the full complexity of cancer as well as to understand whole body responses to tumours.
