Power and Privilege in Academia
online
Hosted by Black and Brown in Bioethics: Working towards equity for people of colour within the UK bioethics community
The group's inaugural event on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
The Black and Brown in Bioethics network aims to create spaces that bring attention to the issues affecting people of colour within the UK bioethics community. Our first webinar, organised by and for people of colour, will begin to explore the power imbalances and oppressive structures that unfortunately continue to pervade academia. We are delighted that we will be joined by Professor Ilina Singh (Professor of Neuroscience and Society at the University of Oxford, England, and Co-Director of the Wellcome Trust Centre for Ethics and the Humanities) and Professor Keisha S. Ray (Assistant Professor of Bioethics and Medical Humanities at McGovern Medical School in Houston, Texas), who will reflect on their experiences of navigating academic culture within the UK and US respectively.
Programme:
- Introduction (16:00-16:10) – Harleen Kaur Johal and Matimba Swana (Co-Founders, BBB), on what we hope to achieve through BBB
- Talk 1 (16:10-16:40) – Professor Keisha S. Ray, on drawing attention to issues of racial justice in bioethics discourse
- Break (16:40-16:50)
- Talk 2 (16:50-17:20) – Professor Ilina Singh, on what steps can be taken to shift UK bioethics research culture in a fairer and more inclusive direction
- Panel discussion (17:20-17:50) – responding to questions submitted by attendees.
- Close (17:50-18:00) – Harleen Kaur Johal and Matimba Swana, on upcoming events
Please note that the webinar will not be recorded; please register to attend.
Note this event may be postponed due to strikes, the organisers will inform registered attendees if this is the case. ALL WELCOME
