Abstract:

Li-Chin Li demonstrates the 37-key Sheng, and its use in contemporary music from the perspective of player, improvisor, composer and performing artist. (In interview-conversation with Michael Ellison). 

Bio:

Li-Chin Li is a Taiwanese sheng soloist, composer, and interdisciplinary performer based in Paris. She works across contemporary music, improvisation, and experimental performance. Her practice combines virtuosic sheng performance, improvised composition, and physical movement, using site-responsive approaches to expand the expressive possibilities of the instrument.

In recent years, her work has been featured in international professional media, including Germany’s neue musikzeitung (nmz), Tagesspiegel, the classical and jazz magazine RONDO, Digital in Berlin, Italy’s Il Resto del Carlino and Gazzetta di Modena, and Radio France Internationale (RFI). In 2026, Cadence Magazine – The Independent Journal of Creative Improvised Music, a U.S. publication dedicated to creative and improvised music, also published a review of her performance, highlighting her work in the field of improvisation.

She has also been invited to participate in international artistic residencies and research programs at institutions including the Royaumont Foundation, IRCAM – Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique, GMEM – Centre National de Création Musicale, Cité internationale des arts in Paris, the French National Centre for Dance (CN D), Elektronmusikstudion (EMS) in Sweden, and the Asian Cultural Council (ACC) in New York
