‘Translation and Emotion’, Wheeler Distinguished Lecture for 2025

The Department of French is delighted to announce that its annual Wheeler Distinguished Lecture for 2025 will be given by the poet and academic Dr Stephen Romer (Oxford) on Wednesday 5 March at 1pm.

 Stephen Romer’s title is Traduire l'affect: the filler, the fulsome and the wilful

 Following a break for refreshments, the afternoon will continue at 3pm with a Translators’ Forum with the following special guest speakers, together with Stephen Romer:

 Mantra Mukim (CY Cergy, Paris), ‘Translation's Edge: Alimentaire, Ekaek, and Struggles with Singularity’

 Delphine Grass (Lancaster), ‘Making Sense/Fabriquer des Sens: Creative-Critical Translation’s Counter-Mediations’

 Rebecca Kosick (Bristol), ‘What Another Feels: On Translating Hélio Oiticica's Secret Poetics’

 Robert Chandler (Oxford), ‘Translation and Pain: St Jerome and the Thorn in the Lion’s Paw’

 Both events will take place in Lecture Theatre 3, 17 Woodland Road, University of Bristol, Clifton, Bristol BS8 1TE.
