Research Seminar: 'The People No-One Imagines Anything Of': Teenage Audiences and British Period Drama

Drawing on her research with teenagers in England, Shelley Anne Galpin will explore how this demographic responds to examples of the period drama genre. The talk will examine the role of genre characteristics in influencing audience responses, and how young people's value systems can be seen to be at work in the formation of their judgements. Considering also the role of representations of race, gender and sexuality, the talk will explore the ways in which historical narratives speak to contemporary concerns and the complex relationship between audience expectation, historical 'truth' and modern values.

All University of Bristol Staff and Students welcome, no booking necessary.
