Realms of Memory Photographic Exhibition
The Royal Photographic Society, 337 Paintworks
Realms of Memory is a photographic exhibition running from 17 October - 22 December at the Royal Photographic Society, Paintworks, Bristol, part of the Bristol Photo Festival 2024. The exhibition unveils evocative narratives crafted by artists as they delve into the intricate tapestries of two historical photographic archives.
The exhibition is produced by Wyng Media Awards (WMA), in collaboration with the Royal Photographic Society and the Hong Kong History Centre at the University of Bristol.
Curated by Chloe Chow and Frank Lam, the exhibition unveils evocative narratives crafted by artists Billy H.C. Kwok, Jay Lau, and Lau Wai as they delve into the intricate tapestries of two historical photographic archives, namely the Historical Photographs of China (University of Bristol) and the Frank Fischbeck Collection (University of Hong Kong).
Through their lens, viewers will be able to experience a city steeped in duality—where reality meets imagination, fact intertwines with fiction, and the private whispers of the past echo in the public domain.
About the Bristol Photo Festival 2024:
The World A Wave is the theme for the second edition of Bristol Photo Festival, the international biennial of contemporary photography, which opens in autumn 2024 (the opening week is 16-20 October 2024).
The Festival programme focuses upon a world in constant motion; where the social, political and environmental conditions of shared life are always changing and becoming otherwise. The dynamic festival, internationally focused but locally grounded, delivers long-term engagement and education programmes engaging with culturally underserved communities and places.
Exhibitions are held in the city’s major visual arts institutions alongside independent and unconventional spaces, all accompanied by a wide events programme engaging with multiple aspects of the city of Bristol.
All exhibitions are free with donations welcome.
