Annual Morse Lecture 2024 - Prof. Stephanie McCarter on 'Translating Ovid's Metamorphoses'

18 April 2024, 5.00 PM - 18 April 2024, 6.30 PM

Professor Stephanie McCarter

Please join us in-person in the Peel Lecture Theatre - or online - for the IGRCT's annual Sir Jeremy Morse lecture.

In this talk, Professor Stephanie McCarter will discuss her recent translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses (Penguin, 2022), which won the 2023 Harold Morton Landon Translation Award from the Academy of American Poets. She will first address her poetic aims, describing how she channelled her classics training into the production of formal poetry and illustrating how she reproduced Ovid's verbal and metrical effects in her English verse. She will then outline her strategies for interpreting and accurately rendering Ovid's themes of sexual violence, gender, sexuality and the body, focusing on his tales of Daphne and Leucothoe. Throughout, she will make the case for more classical scholars to take up literary translation and for the field to embrace and recognize those who do.

There will be a free wine reception downstairs in the Hepple Room after the event. Everyone is welcome.
