Sounds Across Borders and the Ukraine War

This talk focusses on sonic responses to the Russian-Ukrainian war in the spring months of 2022. Listening closely to three musical events – the ITV Concert for Ukraine, the single ‘Hey Hey Rise Up’ by Pink Floyd feat. Andriy Khlyvnyuk, and the Eurovision 2022 winning song ‘Stefania’ by Kalush Orchestra—and suggest that we can think about these examples as migratory. I ponder the extent to which the three musical examples unwittingly aid the exceptionalisation of migration and prop up narratives of marginalisation and ideologies of nationalism.
