Bristol Global Gathering - Bristol Museum
Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, Queens Road, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 1RL
Connect with fellow alumni in Bristol this November to celebrate our season of Global Gatherings.
Join Linda Wilson (LLB 1982) from the Bristol Branch for a curator-led tour of the glass collection at Bristol Museum from 12 until 2 pm on Wednesday 6 November. Following the tour alumni can enjoy refreshments in the cafe.
Bristol has a long history of glassmaking. By the end of the 1600s tall glass cones had become an iconic feature of the city’s skyline and during the following century the glass industry in Bristol flourished. Craftsmen in the city made a wide range of products including window glass, bottles, lead glass and coloured glass, for example the so-called ‘Bristol Blue’. Bristol Museum’s glass gallery displays a range of these objects as well as glass made at other centres of production in the UK and Europe, demonstrating the evolution of the industry in the UK and beyond during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Cicadas, incense and pomegranates: Chinese glass at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery.
Glass is not the most obvious material that springs to mind when thinking of Chinese art, compared with ceramics, paintings and jades. However, glassmaking in China has a fascinating history that goes back over 2,000 years and Bristol Museum & Art Gallery is lucky enough to hold one of the best collections of glass outside China. Kate Newnham, Senior Curator, Visual Arts will introduce the topic in our compact Chinese glass gallery. Tour participants will be invited to consider the physical and symbolic properties of glass, how it was crafted and how it reflects interaction between China and the rest of the world.
