Veterinary Pathology
is part of the Division of Veterinary Pathology,
Infection & Immunity within the
School of Clinical Veterinary Science
. The unit is situated in the
Churchill Building at Langford House, 15 miles from Bristol, in the south-west
of England. The members of staff teach Pathology and Immunology to
veterinary undergraduate students. Immunology is taught in the third
year and Pathology is taught in years three and four. The Veterinary
Pathology unit provides histopathological services for the Department, for
Langford Veterinary Services and for Veterinary Surgeons in general practice. The well-equipped
histology laboratory
also has facilities for histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and for electron microscopy
and participates
in the
Cellular Pathology Technique quality assessment scheme run by UKNEQAS.
Acarus, the University of Bristol's dedicated laboratory for the PCR-detection
of arthropod-borne infectious diseases in companion animals, is located in the
same building. A post-mortem room is shared with the staff of the Veterinary
Laboratories Agency at Langford which is part of the Veterinary Investigations
Agency of the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs
(DEFRA).
Postgraduate training
in Veterinary Pathology is available to suitable candidates and there are also
opportunities for postgraduate MSc and PhD degrees by research. These
places are limited by the availability of funding and as opportunities arise
they are advertised.
