Full Economic Costing

What is the project about?

The aim of the full economic costing project is to deliver tools that will provide Faculties and Departments with an increased understanding of the University’s costs.  It is expected that this will:

  1. Increase cost recovery and improve management of costs.
  2. Support decision making by informing the cost versus the benefit case.
  3. Improve understanding of sustainability and the need for investment, both capital and recurrent.

As most people will know this project has been established for some time and in response to Government requirements has already delivered the research project costing tool which enables research projects to be costed and approved electronically.

More recently a unit costing tool for teaching has also been launched.

The project is now focused on:

  1. enhancing the costing of Research, for example, by separating out major research facilities, and
  2. the costing of Teaching, and to that aim it is expected that a tool covering basic functionality will be available for the 2009/10 academic year.

For more detail regarding the costing of research and teaching please see the previously established fEC web page where there are frequently asked questions, details of training and support and further background information.

This project has again been prioritised by the University and a project team has been re-established to take forward implementation of the next phase of the project.
