Composites are increasingly replacing traditional metallic components in various industrial applications, such as aerospace structures, wind turbine blades and automotive components. Our MSc provides the students with an in-depth theoretical understanding and practical knowledge of advanced composites. The programme is based in the Bristol Composites Institute (BCI), which houses state-of-the-art composites manufacturing facilities to help our students to do cutting-edge research in the field of composites engineering. Furthermore, as BCI has strong industrial and research links with major international companies and research centres, the students will have great opportunities to study more industry relevant problems through your dissertation projects. BCI is also closely collaborating with the National Composites Centre to create synergies between academia and industry.
Our taught units primarily focus on structural mechanics, design and analysis, manufacturing and testing of composites, while providing more optional units to further specialise your expertise in other relevant areas. Our programme is a great career development route for students with engineering backgrounds to develop their expertise in composites engineering, and for students with non-engineering backgrounds to expand their expertise to composites engineering.
The programme includes a research-based dissertation, which allows the students to apply the knowledge and skills acquired from the taught units to scientific and/or industrial problems. This research experience will support students to pursue academic or professional careers in composites engineering.
Fees for 2022/23
We charge an annual tuition fee. Fees for 2022/23 are as follows:
- UK: full-time
- Overseas: full-time
Following the recent changes to fee assessment regulation, Channel Islands and Isle of Man students will no longer be charged a separate tuition fee. From the 2021/22 academic year they will be charged the same fees as Home students.
Fees are subject to an annual review. For programmes that last longer than one year, please budget for up to a five per cent increase in fees each year. Find out more about tuition fees.

You will complete five core taught units and will choose your remaining taught units from a list of options. To complete the programme you will carry out a research project, which may be either academically or industrially led.

Applicants must hold/achieve a minimum of an upper second-class honours degree with a final average of 66% or above (or international equivalent) in a degree in Engineering or a closely related field.

Graduates from this programme could enter a career in one of the rapidly growing composites-related industries, such as aerospace, marine, automotive and wind turbine engineering, materials testing/manufacturing or engineering consultancy. Some of our MSc graduates continue to PhD study.
