Programme overview

The MSc in Engineering with Management postgraduate course is designed for graduates who wish to combine leading-edge knowledge in management practices and state-of-the-art practical advances to lead in the new era of engineering and technology.

This unique, one-year masters degree in Engineering with Management combines the foundations of management for engineering and technology, with the opportunity to pursue one of four specialist pathways.

Taught in the School of Civil, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, you will join one of the UK’s top engineering schools and learn from a distinguished team of experts. With world-leading companies including Arup, Babcock, DNV-GL, GKN, Airbus, Rolls-Royce and the National Composite Centre on our doorstep, we have placed industry at the heart of the vision for this programme and each of its four pathways:

  • MSc in Engineering with Management - Intelligent Manufacturing
  • MSc in Engineering with Management - Energy for Sustainability
  • MSc in Engineering with Management - Infrastructure Systems
  • MSc in Engineering with Management - Engineering Modelling and Simulation

Intelligent Manufacturing will be supported by staff and industry who specialise in the areas of 3D printing, Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things. Likewise, Energy for Sustainability and Infrastructure Systems draw on the University’s well established and respected research history in areas such as smart systems and renewable energy as well as its links to key influencers and decision makers in government. Engineering Modelling and Simulation has been developed from the needs of the aerospace industry for advanced multi-disciplinary modelling and optimisation techniques, and is applicable to other industrial sectors.

Programme structure

Core units provide a common platform of underpinning skills and knowledge at a postgraduate level to help you understand key principles of management and business practices and to develop the interdisciplinary skills required for leadership in engineering and technology industries.

These units include Strategic Business Management for Engineers to provide fundamentals of what strategy is and differentiate it from other business activities. The course is designed to develop your analytical and critical skills in the strategic management issues facing technological organisations in today’s fast-changing environment. The Engineering Design and Technology unit provides knowledge of the technologies on which the modern engineered world is built. It will introduce a combination of theoretical foundations and practical methods and tools. The Uncertainty and Risk Management unit provides relevant techniques to identify, quantify and analyse uncertainties in engineering applications, to support well-informed decisions about improving products, processes and mitigate risk in projects.

Depending on your chosen pathway, you will have the opportunity to choose from optional units including:

  • Smart Cities
  • Automation and Smart Manufacturing
  • Sustainable Energy Technologies Economics and Impacts
  • Engineering for International Development
  • Advanced Techniques in Multi-disciplinary Design.

Finally, you will complete a supervised research-based dissertation project.
