About the Faculty of Arts

Programmes in the Faculty of Arts

The faculty provides world-class academic and professional training for more than 600 postgraduates across a broad range of academic disciplines. Our researchers deal with subjects at the core of human experience; students write and think about the cultural, intellectual and social inheritance of the world’s peoples, past and present. Postgraduates study at three levels: taught master’s (MA), one-year research master’s (MPhil), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

We are a key member of the AHRC South, West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership (SWW DTP), a scholarly community linking eight leading universities and prestigious sector partners to offer doctoral students bespoke training and resources for ground-breaking academic research and a lifetime of intellectual endeavour.

The Faculty of Arts is renowned for its research activity. The unique combination of individual disciplines and collaborations creates a vitality and vibrancy in the faculty’s research structure. All staff in the faculty are active researchers, and many are well known within their own specialisms as well as in the media. Undergraduates in the faculty are in constant contact with academics who are at the forefront of their disciplines, and there is a large cohort of research students across all subject areas.

Strengths of the faculty

We pride ourselves on offering unique resources for research. Bristol’s Theatre Collection, which features 1.5 million items dating from 1572 to the present, is one of the largest archives of British theatre history in the world, shedding rich light on many disciplines. The Brunel Collection is the world’s finest archive of Isambard Kingdom Brunel source material. Alongside other University Special Collections, the Allen Lane Penguin Archive provides further exceptional opportunities for original projects.

Bristol flourishes as a focus for arts and humanities research in a city fast emerging as a leading centre for the creative and cultural economy.
