PASS leader qualities

The ideal PASS leaders will have:

  • satisfactory performance in the first year of their course 
  • good communication and interpersonal skills 
  • good organisational and planning skills 
  • an enthusiastic, reliable, and approachable manner 
  • empathy with the first-year experience 
  • an interest in people and how they learn.

PASS leaders encourage students to work together to review course material. They help students to solve their own problems and deepen their understanding.

  • developing professional skills
  • revising and practicing your subject and gain a deeper understanding
  • enhancing your CV 
  • networking with student leaders from other institutions through PASS conferences and training
  • contributing towards the Bristol PLUS Award.

Expectations of PASS leaders

PASS leaders are expected to:

  • attend three training sessions between April to June and September to October
  • run (bi-)weekly one hour PASS sessions between October to May with a partner 
  • work with students to identify topics they would like to cover 
  • lead student discussion 
  • be supportive of student problems 
  • attend debriefs and top-up training as appropriate 
  • promote PASS via subject societies, speaking at lectures, posters, emails, and so on
  • maintain a professional attitude on issues such as confidentiality, marks and complaints 
  • keep regular contact with your PASS leader partner and Senior PASS leader.
