Hello and welcome to beautiful Bristol! I hope you are as excited as I am to be here (and if not yet, I am sure you soon will be!) and are feeling ready to begin what I am positive will be some of the best years of your life.
I have actually already graduated from Bristol once before, in Human Muscular Skeleton Science – a mouthful, I know!) but after a year working in London I decided that City Girl life was not be for me, so I am back to follow my dream of becoming Dr. Boyd!
I thoroughly enjoyed my three years in Bristol but they did not pass without my fair share of drama. I know how daunting it can be moving out of home for the first time and I understand that things don’t always work out as we plan, so I am here, always with an open door and a willing ear if anything little or large goes wrong. If I can’t help you myself (and I will try my best to) then I will find someone who can. Be it losing your keys or losing a friend there is always someone you can turn to.
I am determined to make the most of being back in Bristol so I’ll keep up to date with University events and things to see in and around Bristol, so if you ever stuck for something to d – just come and ask!
I’m looking forward to meeting you all and making this a memorable year for us all.
Before studying medicine at Bristol, I completed a law degree and worked as a teacher and youth worker in East London, which was quite an experience. I have an open door policy so you can have a confidential chat about anything on your mind. As well as having a forum for getting things off your chest, I can highlight and offer information about the services the University has to offer. It may be a cliche, but it really is good to talk.
look forward to meeting you, and hope you enjoy your first year at University and get involved with the great opportunities that Bristol has to offer.
I am a veterinary science graduate and after 6 years at work decide to Join Bristol University as a Dental surgery student.
I will be one of your senior residents and my main priority will be your comfort, welfare and safety.
University life is challenging and will be enjoyable but his does not mean that problems, including personal problems will never happen. If it does, please do not hesitate to come and have a chat about it, and I will do my best to advise and help.
Once again welcome University life and I hope you will have a successful and enjoyable first year. Looking forward to greeting you all.

My name is Sam and I'm the Senior Resident at The Hawthorns.
I'm 23 and recently graduated from Durham with a degree in Modern Languages. Following a brief foray into the world of work, I will be starting at Bristol this year as a mature medical student.
As Senior Resident I'll be responsible for your welfare and safety for the duration of the year. This includes everything from helping you out with lost keys and maintenance issues to providing confidential support at anytime. More generally, my aim is to provide you with a home from home.
University can be the best time of your life, but you may nevertheless face some difficulties along the way, so don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Just knock on my door anytime you like, and if I'm unable to help you personally, I'll be able find someone who can.
I hope you have a brilliant year and look forward to getting to know you all in the near future!
I will be one of your Senior Residents at the Hawthorns this year. I arrived at Bristol University in 2006 and have never left. I do my undergraduate degree in Theology and continued to do a Masters and now a PhD. As Senior Resident, I am here to make your new life in Bristol everything it should be. I'll be around to answer any questionsor queries on shops, studies, restaurants, bars, pizzas, anything really!
I look forward to meeting you in October!"
Hi, my name is Matthew and I’m one of the Deputy Senior Residents at The Hawthorns, welcome to Bristol!
My role is to ensure everything in the house runs smoothly and to be a point of contact for all of you guys.
I’m always available if you have any questions or problems you want to talk about (I also have spare keys if you get locked out of the building). Alternatively if you fancy a chat and a cup of tea I can pretty much guarantee my kettle will have just boiled.
I’ve just graduated in Physics at Durham, and having poked my nose into the “real” working world have decided it’s not for me so I’ve gone back to Uni to study Medicine. I am originally from Bristol so if you need directions or places to go I know my way around and can point in the vicinity or the nearest pub, supermarket or departmental library.
I’m looking forward to meeting and getting to know you all, and I hope you all have a great 1st year at Bristol!

When people ask me what I was up to before coming to Bristol I usually make some vague joke about being on my ‘gap decade’ but in actual fact I have been living and working in the south west and up and down all over the country and so I can tell you (without wishing to offend anyone) that Bristol is by far one of the best places you could have chosen to come to, it’s got the lot and if you can’t find it in one of BU’s many student clubs and societies then certainly you’ll find it in the city!
I’m Senior Resident at Hillside/Woodside and as this is one of the smallest residences in Bristol we shall no doubt all be on first name terms within no time at all. Well I’m here to talk to, support you, give you advice and the benefit of my experience (and if you’re lucky, with dire home grown cracker barrel philosophy thrown in free of charge!). So Bristol is now your university and the house is our home for the next wee while, so if you’ve got any ideas or suggestions bring ‘em, after all we’re in this thing together!
I’ve lived in Bristol all my life, so if you have any questions about the city, or you need to get somewhere and google is being annoying, I can probably help you out. I’m here to help if there is a problem with your room, or you lock yourself out, or, if you are just feeling abit down. I went away to school at eleven, so I know it can be difficult to be living away from home.
If you have academic problems, I can put you in touch with people who can help. I am studying post-grad English, so if any of you are English students I’ll be delighted to talk literature. Any problems at all, I’m here.
I am also one of the Deputy Wardens of Student Houses. I graduated in 2008 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bristol. During my time as an undergraduate, I had a lot of involvement with the university’s Badminton Club where I stood on the club committee for two years.
My involvement with university sport continued when I was elected by the student body as the Athletic Union Chair 08/09 – a Sabbatical Officer position at the Students’ Union. The role involved overseeing all the university sports clubs, the intramural programme and coordinating events such as the Varsity Series against UWE.
Since then, I have lived in one of the Stoke Bishop halls as a Senior Resident, whilst working full-time as a Service Engineer, specialising in laser cutters and turret punch machinery. My hobbies include running and cycling.
Bristol has so much to offer, so make the most of it! I look forward to meeting you all.
This is my fourth year in Bristol having just finished my undergraduate course in BA (Hons) Archaeology. This year I am doing a Master degree so like all of you this year I will be starting something new.
I started Bristol Uni 3 years ago at 21 years of age; therefore on paper making me a mature student being 21 when I started my course. I spent my 1st year in Northwell house!
My route to University was not straight forward, and whilst I did A levels I was massively unsure of what to do when they finished. Having not had my heart in it the results were disappointing at best and I took a few years out to work in a variety of full-time jobs, travel and ultimately took an Acces to Higher Education course full-time and succeeded getting into Bristol. The opportunities are available to really enjoy.
Hello,Welcome to Bristol Uni and congrats on getting in, I hope you’re excited about starting here.
I’m a third year veterinary medicine student and I’ve loved my time in Bristol so far. My role is to help you settle in, from making friends to working out where your first lecture is, and I’ll be around throughout the year if you need someone to talk things through with or get some advice. Part of my role involves making sure everything’s in working order and to help create a nice environment to live in, so please don’t worry if this is your first time living away from home, there’s plenty of support and guidance here!
Northwell House is in an amazing location, so you’re already set up to have a great time…. You’re close enough to walk to uni and nights out (be that a late night café bar), so make the most of your time here. I’ve lived in this area for the last 2 years so I can definitely point you in the directions of a few places and help you find your feet here.
Starting uni is a bit nerve-wracking, but we are here to help make it as stress-free and as fun as possible. I’m really looking forward to meeting you when you move in.
I am an undergraduate reading Classical Studies, and you'll doubtless gather from my mug shot that I'm a mature student. I've worked full time for many years, have been both tenant and landlord, and hope that I have a wide range of experience to bring to the role of senior resident. I trust it will enable me to help you have an enjoyable, safe and productive time here at Bristol.
I have various interests - films, books, games, aspirations as a writer - but that's such a standard list isn't it. Your interests may well not coincide with mine, which may be no bad thing. How dull if we all liked the same things! However, I'm sure we'll find that we've more in common than we realise. Just don't let me keep banging on about Greeks and Romans, which I'm inclined to do, and may cause drowsiness!
Welcome to Bristol! Well done on getting into your course and I hope you have a wonderful and joy filled year. First year in university is great fun but can also be a daunting experience. I am here to assist you in this transition – my door is always open and feel free to call anytime (I love tea!).
My name is Lisa Collins and I am from Northern Ireland. My undergraduate and Master’s degrees were in English and History, I spent a year at Harvard University studying global health, and I am now a mature student studying Medicine. I am involved in a project in Southern Uganda, am passionate about global development, and love all sports.
My role as Senior Resident is to act as an intermediary between you and the staff of the Halls and Student Houses Office. Not only will I be there when you lose your keys, I will be there to deal with maintenance issues, ensure health and safety regulations are followed, and help with both personal and academic challenges that you may come across. Knock on my door anytime as I will always be available if you have questions or want to chat, always with tea. There will be an introductory meeting when you first arrive to meet everyone, as well as convey important housing and health and safety issues.
Make use of all of the facilities that the university has to offer - from joining societies, going to the gym, or exploring Bristol city. Your first year will go by so fast. I am really looking forward to meeting you all.
Welcome to your new home!
Lisa Collins
Hello and welcome to Bristol University!
I am just going into my second year of an MPhil/PhD in Public International Law, having completed a Masters degree in Law at Bristol in the summer of 2010. Before that I did an Undergrad in Philosophy and English Lit and even did a brief stint at Art College. I have lived in Bristol and studied here for three years and have enjoyed each one thoroughly. As a Senior Resident it is my job to help make sure that you find your time at Bristol as enjoyable and rewarding as I have found mine.
University life can throw you a variety of challenges and it is not always obvious where to turn. Your Senior Residents are a great first point of call that can help you to navigate the range of student services available to ensure that you find the support you need. Alternatively if all you really want is a chat or some support with life in the Student House we’re here for that too.
Please don’t hesitate to come and speak to me if there is something you need or if you just want a chat.
Look forward to meeting you all soon!
Hello, I have just completed an intercalated degree in pharmacology this year. I have been part of University pastoral support team for the past three years with roles of senior resident. I also served as year rep for final year pharmacologists. In my spare time I enjoy a range of sports including tennis cricket and taekwondo. I am actively involved in running career events and regularly attend conferences related to Medicine and Surgery. Given my extensive experience of University life, I hope to make a valuable contribution to your first year stay at Bristol and look forward to welcoming you.
Hi, I am a 27 year old mature undergraduate and will be entering my third year of MEng Civil Engineering this October. It has been hard work but I have enjoyed it so far. This will be my third year as a Senior Resident, having previously worked at Churchill and Badock Halls in Stoke Bishop.
Originally from rural Derbyshire I like to get out into the beautiful countryside surrounding Bristol through weekend walks with the Explorers society. I like to sketch and paint landscapes and enjoy cooking also.
I would highly recommend joining a few societies, although not too many. Societies are a great way to meet new people, there is something to suit everyone. As a student houses resident you will also be part of Orbital, a society for students out of halls which runs regular social and sporting events throughout the year.
If you are experiencing any difficulties or feeling unhappy for any reason or unwell don’t suffer in silence I am here to help. I am happy to listen and give advice where I can or direct you to the most appropriate sources of assistance and information.
I have recently graduated from Bristol myself; I enjoyed my time here so much that I have decided to stay on for another year and study for a Masters.
As your senior resident I am responsible for making the transition to university life as painless as possible. I understand that it can be a bit daunting moving to an unfamiliar place, I did it myself three years ago. But you will settle in and I’m sure you will find university to be an unforgettable experience. I have participated in a wide range of activities during my time here, so can give advice on many of the clubs and societies available to you and if I can’t, I will find someone who can.
University, like life, comes with its ups and downs, so if you get stressed about exams, worried about money or just need someone to talk to, I ma here to help. The university also has a great support network available to everyone.
I look forward to seeing you all soon during what I’m sure will be a great freshers week
I studied at Bristol doing my undergraduate degree in Archaeological Sciences and I loved the place so much I’ve come back to train to be a Math’s teacher.
My role in the house will be to help you through the ups and down of your first year. It is a rather scary experience moving out and living by yourself for the first time, but I’m here to help smooth out the bumps and I’m sure you’ll love Bristol as much as I do.
Last year I worked in London in a large college advising students. I can almost guarantee that whatever problem you have I will have dealt with it before so please feel free to come to me about anything. My door is always open.
I’m really looking forward to meeting you.
I am also one of the Deputy Wardens for Student Houses.
I recently completed a degree in Pharmacology here in Bristol, having spent a year working for GlaxoSmithKline in the United States. I have now started a Masters in Economics, Finance and Management. Aside from my course, I enjoy motorbiking, shooting and going to the gym.
Feel free to come and talk to me at any time if you have any problems or suggestions that you would like to share.
I hope you have a great year, and look forward to meeting you on your arrival!
I have completed my Bachelor’s degree (medicine) and Master’s degree (Medical Anatomy) and I am now a second year PhD student in musculoskeletal sciences at the University of Bristol. On a part-time basis I am also involved in teaching first year dental and medical undergraduates.
As your Deputy senior resident, I am here to always help you out with any problems you may encounter during your stay at Winkworth House so please feel free to come see me whenever you need any advice/assistance regarding anything and I hope to get you sorted out.
In my experience Bristol University campus and city is a very exciting place to be in and I hope all of you have a great year ahead, and lastly, if ever you need any help please don’t forget your senior residents and I am looking forward to seeing you soon!
I am a born and bread Bristolian (and yes I can speak like farmer on request) and so am well placed to tell you anything you need to know about the city.
As a senior resident I’m here to help you to settle into University life and to make sure you do not have too many hitches. I am really happy to help with any problems or issues you might have and if nothing else I am always happy to chat.
Bristol is a beautiful city and with more to do than most British cities its size, you will be able to try so any new things and meet so many new people, you will find it a challenge to ever be bored.
The university in the end is a place for working and the purpose of wherever you live is to provide you with a safe and comfortable environment in which you can work. As a senor resident I want to make sure this remains the case.
Look forward to meeting you soon.
