Staff Development opportunities

Leadership and Management Programmes

Applications for the following 2016/17 Leadership and Management programmes are now open!

Aspiring to Manage
(previously 'Aspiring Managers')
For any individuals looking to develop management skills in order to move into a people management role in future.

Management Essentials
(previously 'First Line Managers')
For grades G, H, I and J who are new to their poeple management role and/or have not previously received any structured management training.

Exploring Leadership
(previously 'Middle Level Managers')
For grades K and L, who currently manage/lead a team and/or are responsible for delivering a service.

Please note:

Information regarding the Bristol Senior Leaders programme for 2016/17 will follow this summer, upon the close and subsequent evaluation next month of its inaugural year.

Technical Leaders programme will not run in 2016/17. Instead, eligible Technical staff may apply for places on the programmes listed above, as well as benefit from the range of development opportunities specifically designed for technical staff.

Leadership and Management Short Courses

Successful Recruitment & Selection
Dates: 16th June, 1st July and 18th July
Time: 09:30-12:30 or 12.30-16.00 (please see website)
Recruitment and selection training is mandatory for all staff involved in any interview or selection process, and is a key element in any hiring manager's "tool kit". The Successful Recruitment & Selection training course will give you the necessary knowledge and confidence to run effective recruitment campaigns on behalf of the University, and greatly improve the likelihood of you recruiting the right person for your team.

Professional skills development workshops

Please find below dates for our professional skills development workshops for all Professional Services staff. Before booking onto a course, please read through our terms and conditions.

Influencing Skills
Date: 20th July
Time: 09:00-13:00
In this interactive workshop we will explore how to tap into your potential to influence. We will consider the importance of social skills in effective influence, practise these skills to influence others to achieve an identified objective, and recognise when and how to accept the opinions, values and needs of others to achieve a win/win outcome.

Professional skills development workshops (Technical Staff only)

Collaborative Working (Technical staff only)
Date: 1st July
Time: 09:00-13:00
This workshop focuses on how we can manage relationships in a positive way by looking at collaborative thinking and action in relation to our communication skills, approaches to problem solving, and how we make decisions.

Technicians' Conference 2016: Bristol; Technically brilliant

Date: Friday 16th September
Time: 09:00-16:30
Venue: Colston Hall

Bristol University is part of the vibrant technical community that thrives in the city. This year we are taking a look at a slice of what Bristol 'technically' has to offer locally, nationally and internationally.

Breathing Space

Breathing Space is an experiential workshop exploring basic mindfulness techniques to help create stillness in everyday life. Discover ways of finding space for yourself during your busy workday. Breathing Space takes place in The Space, Centre for Sport, Exercise & Health, Tyndall Avenue, every third Wednesday of the month between 12.45-13.15. No need to book but places are limited to 20. 

Making IT work for you

IT services provide a range of learning opportunities to help you develop the IT skills that you need for doing your job, research or study.

Technology enhanced learning and education development (TELED) workshops

The TELED team offer a range of workshops for staff, on topics including designing courses and working with Blackboard. Further information and booking for TELED workshops.

SETsquared Workshops

Directors Responsibilities
Date: 29th June
Time: 14.00
This workshop, led by Nick Sturge, Director of Engine Shed, will help you understand the role of the board, how you can enhance your business with an effective board and how to use it.

Negotiation Skills
Date: 6th July
Time: 14.00
Negotiation skills are of key importance in business. This workshop combines negotiations theory backed up by audio examples, together with practical exercises related to real world business cases.

Engine Shed workshop

Finance Series Event: The US & UK outlook for venture capital funding
Date: 29th June
Time: 16:00-17:00
Engine Shed runs the second in its finance series with the outlook for venture capital funding from PWC. Talk with Q&A, followed by drinks and networking. This is a must attend event for those wishing to understand the venture capital landscape in both the UK and USA, and will be especially valuable to companies seeking investment over £500,000.
