Stepping into Leadership - Programme Details

In the early stages of an academic career a lot of success can be achieved working independently; it requires different skills to manage other people as your career moves on. Stepping into Leadership will introduce skills for managing difficult conversations, negotiating and influencing others and communicating effectively, and will help you to recognise your own leadership style and how you can build an effective team from the very start.

The main elements of the programme which all participants will engage in are:

  • 4 workshops
  • 3 action learning half-days

Eligibility criteria

This programme is aimed at:

  • Academic staff from any of the three pathways (likely to be levels B and C/Grades J and K) who are either becoming independent researchers and starting to build a team and/or who are starting to manage others within teaching-related roles. Leadership level – Aspiring academic leader.
  • You should already have some people management experience, perhaps from supervising PhD students and/or delegating work to technical or administrative staff, and be seeking to become more effective in the way you approach this with a view to leading a team.

Programme costs

Half of the cost of this programme (£500) will be funded by Academic Staff Development. The remaining half (£500) will be funded by the participant's School. This will be automatically deducted from the charge code provided on the application form once the programme starts.

Please note, this programme is an updated version of Preparing to Manage Research Groups and so would not be suitable for those who have already attended that.
