The Street Play project will roll out nationally a street-play intervention to close selected residential streets to through-traffic after school (from 3.30 to 5pm) so that children can play safely with minimal disruption to cars.
The project was based on unique evidence from University of Bristol (Page/Cooper) that time spent outdoors is an important potential mechanism to increase physical activity and highlighting the importance of streets as well as green space for physical activity.
To generate this evidence location data from GPS was integrated with activity data from accelerometers to objectively quantify children’s time spent active outdoors compared to indoors. These techniques were also used in spatial narratives to understand how children use their local environment.
These methods were developed as part of the PEACH (World Cancer Research Fund) & PEAR (Medical Research Council) projects.
