Course aims and objectives

To provide a basic introduction to the statistical software package Stata 12, focusing on its use for data management and data exploration.

Please note:students will be given a brief introduction to some simple statistical commands; the focus of the course is not on the use of Stata for analytical purposes.

Who the course is intended for

The course is intended for anyone who will use Stata regularly in their day to day work as a data management tool and/or for performing statistical analyses. Previous experience with handling data is therefore required, as is a familiarity with Microsoft Windows. No previous knowledge of Stata or of statistical analyses is necessary. Students will gain the familiarity with Stata that is a pre-requisite for several other courses in the short course programme.

Teaching time

Fourteen hours, consisting of practical sessions and short tutorials.
