This is a short 4 week course run towards the end of the academic year and is an external SSC (Student Selected Component) for medical undergraduate students. The programme aims to allow participants to:

• Gain an understanding of the importance of evidence-based surgery
• Gain an understanding of how new surgical interventions are developed and evaluated
• Consider opportunities to become involved in surgical research
• Develop critical thinking, team-working, collaborative and presentation skills.

By completion of this course the student will be able to:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the how and why surgery should be evaluated to promote evidence-based practice;
• Develop an understanding of some of the challenges involved in developing and evaluating surgical interventions and how these may be addressed;
• Consider opportunities to become directly involved in undertaking surgical research;
• Present a surgical research project to an audience of health professionals;
• Develop reflective practice through the preparation of the eSSC report.

These skills will then lead to improved patient care and to benefits for the NHS because it will enable surgeons to read research evidence and to understand whether it is valid - thereby providing the evidence and tools to change practice.
