SCN funding calls
Pilot project grants
Deadline: 5 pm, Friday, January 7, 2011
Small grants are available from the SCN to support pilot projects in the area of Synthetic Biology.
Applications must:
- Be submitted by early career investigators*;
- Involve a principal applicant and a collaborative applicant(s), both(all) affiliated to the SCN;
- For PhD students and PDRAs, be supported by the principal applicant’s group leader, who will act as sponsor for the project**;
- Have the long-term objective(s) of pump-priming larger projects, and/or providing preliminary data to support grant applications to external funders.
Funds can be sought to support travel and subsistence, and small research costs up to maximum of £1,500 and £3,000, respectively.
The SCN expects to be able to fund up to three pilot projects.
*By early career investigators we mean PhD students, PDRAs or new faculty within 3 years of their first appointment and without significant grant income.
**This is simply to allow funds to be transferred from the SCN to a recognised budget holder.

Research exchange prizes
Rolling deadline: applications accepted at any time
The Network wishes to encourage exchanges of researchers - primarily graduate students and post-docs - between disciplines and laboratories of the Network. To do so applicants can enter a competition to win a researcher exchange prize worth £500. These funds must be used to contribute to travel and accommodation costs of the exchange.
Competition applications should be made by the researcher and submitted by their group leader. Theses should be accompanied by an e-mail from the lead of the host laboratory indicating their willingness to accommodate an exchange. Please use the exchange prize application form [MS Word (39kB)]. The form requires a brief (1/2 side of A4 maximum) description of the proposed activity of the exchange.

Exchanges should broadly address the overriding theme of The Network:
Towards Synthetic Biology from the bottom up
- Exchanges should be between groups who are members of the SCN (in exceptional cases exchanges outside the network will be considered).
- Cross-disciplinary exchanges are particularly encouraged.
- Exchanges are welcome in all aspects of the SCN’s activities, i.e. scientific, ELSI and public engagement.

Grant development awards

The Network wishes to encourage collaborative grant applications by SCN members in the area of Synthetic Biology. To do so funds will be made available to support grant development meetings.
Call details
- Applications for grant development funds should be made by a member of the SCN
- Attendees at grant development meetings should be members of the SCN
- Non-SCN members may attend given that the added value they bring to the proposed grant application is justified
- Grant applications should broadly address the overriding theme of The Network: towards Synthetic Biology from the bottom up
- Cross-disciplinary grant proposals are particularly encouraged
- Applications are welcome in all aspects of the SCN’s activities, i.e. scientific, ELSI and public engagement

Available funds
Funds are available to contribute to reasonable travel (standard class rail tickets, economy flights or petrol costs), accommodation, room hire and subsistence costs and will be considered on a case by case basis. Details must be included in the grant development fund application.
