Val Williams is the new Head of Norah Fry Research Centre

As from Easter 2013, Val Williams took over as the new Head of Centre for Norah Fry. She has been at the centre some 15 years, and so has a long history here. She hopes to build on the existing contacts that the Centre has, in order to maintain and extend strong partnerships with a range of organisations and individuals.

Study finds people with learning disabilities are more likely to have a premature death compared with general population

A three-year study into the extent of premature death in people with learning disabilities has found that those with learning disabilities are more likely to have a premature death compared with individuals in the general population. The findings, published in a Department of Health report, have made a series of recommendations aimed at improving the quality of healthcare that people with learning disabilities receive.

Helping parents with a learning disability get better support

The Working Together With Parents Network (WTWPN) has been awarded nearly £200,000 from the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation for a new project that builds on previous work to support parents with learning disabilities, and the professionals that assist them.

Norah Fry Research Centre on BBC Radio 4’s Word of Mouth

Michael Rosen met with Norah Fry’s Dr Val Williams this week, to interview her and two of her colleagues with learning disabilities for the BBC Radio Four programme Word of Mouth. This episode was about communicating with people with learning disabilities and autism, and the Norah Fry contribution was based on inclusive research, which analysed conversations between support workers and those they support.
